Thinking about City and Guilds...

I have been thinking about doing City and Guilds for Embroidery course for a while and just did a search on the web for artists who did C&G courses. Wow, if taking these courses means you will be able to create theses wonderful pieces - what am I waiting for? *LOL*
No, for real - should I do it or not? What makes me hesitate is the long term commitment. Not sure if I will stick to it, but I would love to do it.
I have to learn so much more and I have the feeling that all those books I order are just sitting on the shelf, gathering dust. I know that I work a lot better with a time frame and somebody who is looking over my shoulder, asking me why I am not working harder.
Is there anybody out there who has done the embroidery course with C&Gs or is thinking about doing it? Would love to talk to somebody who has the same thoughts about joining/not joining or who can tell me a bit more about the course and where to study. I found a few online schools that offer the courses and I think Opus School of Textile Arts is the one that is mentioned most of the time.
Will have to think about it for a few more days, but I have to decide before the end of next week cause all this thinking about C&G drives me nuts and keeps me from being creative.

DO IT! I have been contemplating their patchwork diploma program for almost a year now. We decided not to commit until we knew where we would be living for the next two years (didn't want to have 3 months of cross-Atlantic move disrupt my coursework). Now that we know we're staying for a while, I have commited to creating enough quilts for a show in January. After that though, I am going to do all I can to take the course. I looked at Opus and also at Linda Kemshall's program. I think that for embroidery, Opus looks wonderful. For patchwork, I prefer the work I've seen from teh Kemshals.

My advice would be to do the course; if you have a choice try to join a class, even if it is only at the weekends so many times a year the interaction with others and actually seeing the tutor is invaluable. I did my part one with Stitch Design ( before it was renamed Opus) -as I worked full time it was the only choice. Linda Kempshalls designing sketch book course might be a good option ; as presumably you still need to complete working designs at some point. Wish I could do it all again. If you have any other questions please ask.

You will love it - i studied with Sian Martin at Urchfont Manor in Wiltshire. She also does distant learning and she is very clear and structured in her approach.Sian also does a summer school, which many of her students find useful. here is the link:

Hi Karin - just found your blog as I am investigating embellishers. Anyay, I am on my 2nd C&G course at Gloscat and really recommend it. I did 7822 in machine embroidery last year, and am doing 7922 this year and next (well, that's the plan!). Have a look at my tutor's site www.stitchhost.co.uk/pocketmouse
she has links to her galleries of students' work and hers. You can see mine in 2005. They do distance learning, too. Getting together with other stitchers is really inspiring, but distance seems to work well too (Sophie is a distance learner).
Sorry if my info is too late to help, but couldn't help joining in!
